Ormalingen is a municipality in the district of Sissach, in the canton of Basel-Country in Switzerland.

History

Ormalingen is first mentioned in 1280 as ''Normendingen''.

Geography

Ormalingen has an area, , of . Of this area, or 51.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 37.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 11.4% is settled (buildings or roads), or 0.1% is either rivers or lakes.Swiss Federal Statistical Office-Land Use Statistics

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.2% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 7.2% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.7%. Out of the forested land, 34.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 14.8% is used for growing crops and 30.4% is pastures, while 5.8% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.

The municipality is located in the Sissach district, in the upper Ergolz valley on the old road over the Schafmatt pass.

Most of the population () speaks German (1,747 or 92.9%), with Italian language being second most common (42 or 2.2%) and Albanian being third (31 or 1.6%). There are 10 people who speak French and 1 person who speaks Romansh.

Heritage sites of national significance

The Ruins of Farnsburg Castle is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Farnsburg Castle was built in the 14th Century as the seat of the Counts of Thierstein.

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.78% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SP (22.82%), the FDP (16.92%) and the Green Party (16.7%). In the federal election, a total of 652 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 48.0%.
