A solicitor and notary public, was a senior partner and consultant with Cartwrights, Adams & Black in Cardiff. He was president of
Cardiff Law Society from 1995 to 1996.
Joining RNVR in 1952, he spent his National Service in the Royal Navy from 1958 to 1960. Following this, he joined the South Wales Division of the
