Wheen joined the law department at the University of Otago in 1984 as a student, gaining her

before joining the academic staff in 1989, rising to associate professor in 2015 and full professor in 2021. Wheen completed a

Wheen also has an interest in how the Treaty of Waitangi affects environmental law. Wheen is a member of the Centre of Research Excellence ''Coastal People: Southern Skies,'' led by Anne-Marie Jackson and Rosalina Richards. She has co-edited books on the Treaty of Waitangi, and
