History
The university was opened on January 17 (31), 1916 as one of the three People's Universities of Russia that are part of the system of "free" universities. For Nizhny Novgorod it was the first institution of higher education. In 1918, the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute of Emperor Nicholas II was evacuated to Nizhny Novgorod. After the merger of this university with this institute and with the Higher Agricultural Courses, it was the first in the country to receive the status of a state university. In 1921, there was a significant reduction in the number of faculties. On May 4, 1921, a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR was issued on the liquidation of all the historical and philological faculties of the country and the organization in their place of the faculties of social sciences, which also affected the University of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1922, the number of teachers is reduced from 239 to 156. On April 14, 1930, the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR adopted a resolution to disband a number of universities, including UNN. Some faculties are transformed into 6 institutes: Mechanical Engineering Institute (in 1934 it became part of the Gorky Industrial Institute) Institute of Chemical Technology (in 1934 it became part of the Gorky Industrial Institute) Faculty of Education (in 1930 it was separated into the Pedagogical Institute) Faculty of Agronomy (in 1930 it was separated into an agricultural institute) Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering (in 1930 it was separated into a construction institute) Faculty of Medicine (in 1930 it was separated into a medical institute). A year later, on November 11, 1931, the university was re-established. It consists of 3 faculties: Physics and Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. The building of the former theological seminary on the Minin and Pozharsky Square (now the building of the Natural Geography Faculty of the National State Pedagogical University named after Kozma Minin) became the educational and scientific base. By 1932, the UNN had the following departments: physical, mechanical, zoological, botanical, chemical, and mathematical. Since 1938, entrance exams were established and for the first time Gorky University held a competitive recruitment of freshmen. On March 20, 1956, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Gorky State University was named after N. I. Lobachevsky. In addition to educational activities, Lobachevsky University is actively involved in scientific and technical activities of national importance. In 1932, the Research Institute of Physics and Technology joined the structure of the university. It is still part of UNN and actively cooperates with Roscosmos and other public and private organizations. In 1944, the Research Institute of Chemistry was established, which contributed to the development of the national chemical and military industry. In 1956, the Scientific Research Institute of Radiophysics was formed on the basis of the university. In 1969 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his achievements in radiophysics, radio engineering and astronomy. In 1974, the Research Institute of Mechanics was opened. In 2012, the Scientific Institute of Living Systems was opened within the framework of the University of Nizhny Novgorod, which in 2016 was transformed into the Research Institute of Neurosciences. This unit deals with the study of the activity of the brain. In 2014, the Lobachevsky supercomputer with a capacity of 570 Teraflops began work at UNN. Among Russian universities, this is the fourth most powerful supercomputer. It is also included in the list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world 0 As part of the federal program for the development of the pharmaceutical and medical industry, the Center for Innovative Development of Medical Instrumentation was established at the university in 2017.
