The embassy failed to be recognized by Louis XVI however, because it had not been properly accredited by the French Consul in Morocco Louis Chénier and that the title of the King of France had not been properly rendered."The missions of Tahar Fannish in 1778 and Ali Perez in 1781 to France were thwarted on the allegation that Muhammad III did not respect the rules of French protocol concerning the title of the King of France" in ''The Atlantic connection: 200 years of Moroccan-American relations, 1786-1986'' Jerome B. Bookin-Weiner, Mohamed El Mansour, Edino, 1990, p.43 Following this incident, Louis Chénier was summoned by Mohammed ben Abdallah on 21 September 1781, and was expelled from Morocco.
