Early life and high school

Barrett was born in Valdosta, Georgia where he attended high school at Lowndes. In Barrett's junior season he was named the Class 7A state player of the year. In Barrett's senior season he completed 110 of his 156 passes for 1,705 yards and 16 touchdowns, with two interceptions, while also adding 1,195 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. College career

In Barrett's first career season in 2019 he played mostly on special teams where he played in eleven games notching seven tackles. In the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, Barrett recorded 43 tackles with two being for a loss, a sack, and a forced fumble, while also taking a kickoff back 66 yards. In the 2021 season, Barrett recorded 21 tackles with two being for a loss, a sack, and a pass deflection. In week six of the 2022 season, Barrett totaled seven tackles and a crucial sack, as he helped Michigan survive Indiana. In week ten, Barrett recorded his first career interception, picking off two passes, and returning one for a touchdown, in a win over Rutgers. Barrett finished his breakout 2022 season with 72 tackles, with five going for a loss, three and a half sacks, a pass deflections, two interceptions, and a touchdown. For his performance on the season, Barrett was named third team all Big Ten. Barrett decided to return to the Wolverines for the 2023 season to play his final season of eligibility. Barrett opened the 2023 season as one of Michigan's six team captains.Barrett won a national championship with Michigan in 2023. He also earned a 3rd-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023, making him a 2x All-Big Ten selection.
