Aadhyan" literally means "the first one" in Malayalam).
Aadhyans adopted the title of "
Nambudiripad" to show their superior status. However in the subsequent centuries, several non-Aadhyan families (known as
Aasyan Nambudiris) have also adopted the title of "Nambudiripad" in imitation of
Aadhyan Nambudiris.
