The name ''Merig'' comes from the

. It comes from a Proto-Torres-Banks form *''mʷera riɣi'' "the small boy" via haplology to ''*mʷeriɣi''. It contrasts with

History

The first recorded sighting of Merig Island by Europeans was by the Spanish expedition of
