to meet the parents of his fiancée, Pam Burns, for a weekend that ended in disaster. Despite his efforts to impress Pam's father Irv, a retired gas station owner, and his wife Kay, Greg sets off several accidents upon arriving at their house. He breaks the crank off Irv's prized Victrola, overflows the toilet, ruins Kay's roast, rents a seemingly family-friendly VCR that turns out to be a slasher pornographic film, and almost pokes out Kay’s eye with a fishing pole. At dinner, Greg mentions writing a commercial starring

Before Greg goes to bed on the living room couch, he refuses Fay's offer of marijuana, and she leaves two joints in his luggage. Irv frames him for the joints the next morning. When Greg takes the Burns' car to buy zip-loc bags for their picnic, an unlicensed driver wrecks the car, and Greg returns with baggies. At the picnic, Greg throws a stick that the family dog Bingo chases into a lake, where he drowns. That evening, Pam's ex-boyfriend Lee challenges Greg to a bar brawl, and the couple escapes by car. Later, Greg tries sneaking upstairs into Pam's bedroom but ends up in Fay's room. The next afternoon, Greg and Pam prepare to leave, but Fay still demands that he hear her sing, so he invites her to perform at his wedding. He discovers his car has broken down, fails to fix it with Irv, and sets off more accidents on his way back into the house. In a room with an

containing the ashes of Irv's mother Penny, Greg tells Pam they should flee the house, but Pam urges him to stay one more night. He closes the door behind them as they walk out of the room, causing Penny's portrait to fall and break the urn, shocking Irv. Following dinner, Kay trips over Greg's luggage and falls down the stairs. In a final attempt to end the weekend on a positive note, Greg listens to Fay sing the ballad "When Philip's There" from a musical adaptation of '' Jaws''. Although he tries praising her performance, she begs him for suggestions, and he infuriates her by saying she needs more lessons. To get revenge, Fay lies to her family about Greg wanting to be intimate with her, so the heartbroken Pam hides in her room, forcing Greg to leave without her. As he approaches the front door, Pam's scream coming from Fay's room startles her parents. Irv discovers Fay has hanged herself with a sign reading "Greg killed me" around her neck, rushes partway downstairs, and fires his gun. The gas station owner concludes his story by narrating that Irv accidentally killed Kay and Pam, then died suddenly of a heart attack on the stairs, while Greg turned out fine. The customer and his fiancée, who dismisses the story, leave, although he is now uneasy about meeting her parents, especially when she mentions her mother is preparing a roast. Another customer arrives on his way to take his children to a circus, and the owner advises him against it, beginning a new story.

Ayscough predicted that the film "could garner a cult following among anti-establishment urbanites" due to its "blatant attack on marriage, suburban indifference, Christian hypocrisy and the nuclear family" and unsuitability for mainstream audiences. Opining that the "script desperately needed an objective eye," she concluded by calling the film an "amusing vehicle which aptly displays the multiple talents of Greg Glienna." Remake

Producer Nancy Tenenbaum acquired the rights to the original film and then she sent a copy to several people of interest hoping to have a new version of the film made. Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh replied that he was interested and that he wanted to direct a remake.
