Maple, Dallas

Maple Lawn, or Maple for short is an area in Dallas, Texas, United States, which is home to government owned section 8 projects. The area has long been home to a largely African American and Hispanic community. Maple Avenue is the main road through the area, although the Maple Lawn area is unofficially the area bound to the West/Southwest of Harry Hines Boulevard, to the East by the Dallas North Tollway, to the North/Northeast by Lemmon Avenue, and to the Northwest by Mockingbird Lane.

History

Dallas was founded in 1841 by a merchant named John Neley Bryan, two years after the area was surveyed in 1839. Dallas County was founded in 1846 and named after George Dallas, the eleventh vice president of the United States. However, the exact origin of the city's name is still unknown. Residents called the city as such at least as early as 1843, so there are currently four main theories about the origin of the name:

• Named after George Dallas;

A year later, the city failed to convince the Union Pacific Railroad to build a road through Dallas, so an emergency amendment to state law was passed, allowing the road to be built only near Browder Springs, south of the main road.
