(2019) recovered ''Steneosaurus bollensis'' and other ''Steneosaurus'' species in disparate positions within Teleosauridae. In 2016, its length was estimated at , making it the largest known Early Jurassic crocodylomorph. In 2020, the genus was formally revived.
