Etymology

The name ''Lyne'' was recorded first as ''Lyn'' in around 1190, and is of Brittonic origin. Unlike most rivers named ''Lyne'', it is derived from ''lïnn'', generally meaning "a pool" ( Welsh ''llyn'').
