History

The paper has been in existence under different names since the early days of Lander, beginning around 1908. The name ''Lander Journal'' was adopted in the 1990s, but previously it was called the ''Wyoming State Journal'' and the ''Lander Wyoming State Journal''. From the 1970s to the early 1990s, the paper was published by Bill Sniffen and was nominated for a

in 1991. In 1999, the Lander Journal was acquired by the Riverton Ranger from Bill and Nancy Sniffin. Steve Peck of the Riverton Ranger managed the newspaper from 1999 until 2022, when the publications were sold to Grace Andrus, a local financial adviser. However, a month after Andrus purchased the papers, they were sold again in February 2022 to the Edwards Group, who currently own and manage them.
