Kristín studied at Reykjavik Junior College, then continued to study pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Iceland (BSc, 1978). She received her doctoral degree from

(PhD, 1983), in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry, focusing on natural products.  Her PhD supervisor was Professor Peter J. Hylands. Her research has involved isolation and chemical identification of active pharmacological compounds from Icelandic lichens, mosses and marine organisms. She has further written on the urgency of strategic reform in education to meet changing needs for working environments, society and individual well-being.Ingolfsdottir K.
