ted in 1880 when the railroad was extended to that point. The city was named for William A. Kindred, a local businessman and afterward mayor of Fargo, North Dakota. A post office has been in operation at Kindred since 1881. Kindred was incorporated as a city in 1949.

The Kindred Public School District was organized in 1875. It is one of the largest rural schools in Cass County.
