Gallagher was born in New York, daughter of

and Paula Harwood. She moved to Los Angeles at 11 years old, where she began to study theatre at the Adderley School. She also started seriously writing her own music when she was in middle school. She identifies as bisexual. She attended University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.
