under Benedict Arnold as his aide. On 5 January 1782 Dalrymple was appointed minister plenipotentiary to Poland, and from 5 August 1785 until 1788 was minister plenipotentiary to Berlin. He succeeded to the peerage on the death of his father in 1789, and was a representative peer from 1793 to 1807, and from 1827 until death. Stair died without issue on 1 June 1821.
