He married his first cousin Nelly Mejía Arbeláez, with whom he had ten children, nine of them surviving into adulthood: María Eugenia, Luz Marina, María Cristina, María Inés, Nestor Francisco, Jesús Alberto, Rosario del Pilar, José Joaquín, and Pablo.
