Xu was born Xu Huafu ( zh, s=徐华富, t=徐華富, links=no) in Dachuan District of

After graduating the Wan County Institute of Philosophy in 1943, he taught at a Catholic church in Zhong County. He was ordained a priest in 1946. In 1947 he was accepted to the
