Notable events

In September 2024, Stuart Mast died near Jefferson, while in the custody of the Ashe County Sheriff's Office. His death resulted in public outcry across North Carolina, due to inconsistencies from the agency and evidence of misconduct. In January 2025, LifeStore Bank of Jefferson was the subject of an armed robbery.
