Hayward's inaugural Professorial lecture was titled ''Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Constitution, and our political imagination'', and was delivered in November 2017. Hayward is currently the Head of the Politics Department at the University of Otago. In 2018, Hayward gave a public lecture to celebrate 125 years of suffrage in New Zealand.
