History

The station opened as on 1 September 1891. It was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of the

(JNR) on 1 April 1987 and was transferred to the Iwate Ginga Railway on 1 September 2002. Services on the Tohoku Shinkansen commenced 1 December 2002. The station was renamed Iwate-Numakunai at that time.
