History

It was founded in 1990 in partnership between the Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier University (UT3), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse and the University of Social Sciences of Toulouse ( UT1) which became Toulouse 1 Capitole University in 2009 and Toulouse Capitole University (UT Capitole) in 2023. A new partner has joined the initial supervision: the University of Toulouse-Le Mirail (Toulouse 2) called the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès (UT2 or UT2J) since 2015. It results from the merger of 2 URA (Associated Research Units) of the CNRS and the Paul Sabatier University (LSI: Computer Languages and Systems, directed by René Beaufils then Jean Vignolle and CERFIA (Business Cybernetics, Shape Recognition and Intelligence), directed by Serge Castan and Guy Pérennou and the CIT (Toulouse Computer Center) of Paul Sabatier University, created by Michel Laudet, a pooling of research resources desired by the Midi-Pyrénées regional council. It was directed from 1990 to 1998 by Jean Vignolle, from 1998 to 2011 by Luis Fariñas del Cerro and from 2011 to 2020 by Michel Daydé. Since January 1, 2021, Jean-Marc Pierson has been its director. Since its creation, it has welcomed teams from various laboratories from Toulouse universities. It brings together (April 2021) around 600 members and around a hundred external collaborators, including 241 teacher-researchers, 37 researchers, 205 doctoral students, 13 post-doctoral students, and 33 administrative and technical staff. In terms of the number of researchers, IRIT is the largest CNRS UMR, as well as the largest French research institute in computer science.Institut de recherche en informatique de Toulouse - IRIT
