History

Hakodate airport opened in 1961 with a single 1,200 m runway. A new terminal upgrade and runway extension to 2,000 m became operational in 1971. The runway was extended further to 2,500 m in 1978 and to 3,000 m in 1999. A new terminal building opened in 2005. On September 6, 1976, Soviet pilot
