McAuley began his career at Liverpool, but made his senior debut on loan at Tranmere Rovers. He joined

for £12,000 in 1974 and won promotion to the Second Division in his first season with the club. He moved to Charlton Athletic in 1976, where he played for two seasons, and then returned to Tranmere. McAuley joined
