and was a Republican. From 1890 to 1894, Legler served as secretary of the Milwaukee School Board. From 1904 to 1909, Legler served as secretary of the Wisconsin Library Commission. Then, from 1909 until his death in 1917, Leger served as librarian of the Chicago Public Library. Legler also served as president of the
American Library Association The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with 49,727 members a ...
in 1912 and 1913. Legler also served as curator of the
