in the new ministry formed by Albert Hawke. He was also made Minister for Railways after the 1956 election, and remained in the ministry until the government's defeat at the 1959 election. From 1958 to 1962, Strickland was the leader of the Labor Party in the Legislative Council. He remained in parliament until his resignation in December 1970, and died only a few months later, in May 1971. He had married Thelma Marie Colgan in 1927, with whom he had four children.
