Career

Stern received all three of his degrees from the University of Michigan: a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1943, a Master of Arts in Art History in 1948, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Art History in 1959. In 1950, Stern began working at the
Freer Gallery of Art The Freer Gallery of Art is an art museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. focusing on Asian art. The Freer and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery together form the National Museum of Asian Art in the United States. The Freer and Sac ...
of the Smithsonian Institution. He was appointed as Assistant Director in 1962, and was promoted to Director in 1971. He remained in that position until his death. Stern died in 1977 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
