Hansen was born on 6 October 1872. He was a journalist by profession and worked in the social democrat papers based in

. From 1894 he became a congress member of the Social Democrats and between 1906 and 1915 he was part of its main board. He was elected to the Parliament in 1913 where he served until 1945 when he resigned from the post. He became mayor of
