Grossdietwil is first mentioned in 1194 as ''Toutwillare''. Since 1810 it has been known as Grossdietwil.


Geography

Grossdietwil has an area, , of . Of this area, 72.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 22% is forested. The rest of the land, (5.8%) is settled. , 21.99% of the total land area was forested.
