The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 36,877 people in 10,854 households, by which time the village had been elevated to the status of a city. After the census, Golbahar District was separated from Chenaran County to establish Golbahar County. It was divided into two districts, four rural districts, and two cities, with the city of Golbahar as its capital.
