Subspecies

There are two subspecies: *''Gentianella quinquefolia'' ssp. ''occidentalis'' - a more western variety, with larger flowers. Found in dry calcareous areas. *''Gentianella quinquefolia'' ssp. ''quinquefolia'' - primarily Appalachian, with smaller flowers. Found in forests and Appalachian balds.
