After the end of the Cultural Revolution, he was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and professor in 1988. He retired in December 1990.
In August 2006, he was among the first batch of scholars to be elected honorary academicians of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Gao died in Beijing on 22 August 2019, aged 89.
