He therefore became known as Friedrich Franz ''Herzog'' von Mecklenburg-Schwerin (or Friedrich Franz, The Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin) ''de facto'' since the establishment of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
