Francis Laurens Vinton (1835–1879) served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. As colonel he commanded the 3rd Brigade of Howe's division at the
Battle of Fredericksburg The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought December 11–15, 1862, in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia, in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. The combat, between the Union Army of the Potomac commanded by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnsi ...
, and was very badly wounded.Warner 1964, p. 528. He never saw active service again, but in 1863 he was appointed brigadier general.


Legacy

Vinton's likeness is featured on the northern side of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Portland, Maine.
