The word "estuary" is derived from the Latin word ''aestuarium'' meaning tidal inlet of the sea, which in itself is derived from the term ''aestus'', meaning tide. There have been many definitions proposed to describe an estuary. Salt wedge
In this type of estuary, river output greatly exceeds marine input and tidal effects have minor importance. Freshwater floats on top of the seawater in a layer that gradually thins as it moves seaward. Production in 2016 from recreational and commercial fishing contributes billions of dollars to the United States’ gross domestic product (GDP). A decrease in production within this industry can affect any of the 1.7 million people the fishing industry employs yearly across the United States.
Implications for marine life
Estuaries are incredibly dynamic systems, where temperature, salinity, turbidity, depth and flow all change daily in response to the tides. This dynamism makes estuaries highly productive habitats, but also make it difficult for many species to survive year-round.
