Édith Dumont (born 1964) is a Canadian educator who will succeed Elizabeth Dowdeswell as the lieutenant governor of Ontario, the 30th since Canadian Confederation. She will be the viceregal representative of the King in Right of Ontario.


Early life and education

Dumont was born in 1964 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec. She was educated at the University of Ottawa, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology in 1985 and a Master of Education (MEd) in 1997, the , completeing a

in psychology in 1986, and the , graduating with a Bachelor's degree in orthopedagogy in 1988.


Career

Dumont worked for the for 30 years, becoming its director of education and Secretary-treasurer. She was the first woman to lead the board. Since April 2020, she has served as vice-president of partnerships, communities and international relations at the in Toronto. She has served on the boards of the , and the Ottawa Network for Education. On August 3, 2023, Dumont's appointment by Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada (representing King Charles III), on the advice of Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, as the 30th lieutenant governor of Ontario was announced. She will be the first

Personal life

Dumont and her partner, Tony Viscardi, have three children, Éloïse, Antoine and Gabrielle.


Titles, styles and honours

For her services to education and Francophone communities, Dumont has been honoured as a (knight) of the and awarded the in 2021, the in 2020 and the Order of Ottawa in 2017. As lieutenant governor, Dumont will become an Member (OOnt) and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. As a lieutenant governor in Canada, Dumont will entitled to be styled " the Honourable" for life and " Her Honour the Honourable" while in office.
