Geography

The Sheyenne River flows easterly through the upper part of the county. The county terrain consists of semi-arid hills, featuring some agriculture. The terrain slopes to the east and slightly to the north, with its highest point on a hill at the county's southwestern corner, at ASL. The county has a total area of , of which is land and (2.2%) is water. It is the smallest county in North Dakota by area.
