Overview

The model was first announced and displayed at the 20th Indonesia International Motor Show in September 2012 as Toyota and Daihatsu's response to the Indonesian government's plan for the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) program which eliminates luxury goods tax for eligible vehicles. The ratification of the LCGC program by the government was delayed by a year, which also delayed the mass production and market launch to September 2013. Early models were solely powered by a 998 cc '' 1KR-DE'' three-cylinder engine. In 2014, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) introduced the car as the Wigo.

The Ayla (1.2-litre variants) and the Indonesian-market Agya received their second facelift on 19 March 2020. This facelift includes an updated front bumper design, updated tail light cluster, redesigned side mirrors (with auto retractable function for Ayla 1.2 R, Agya 1.2 G and 1.2 TRD S trims), updated 14-inch alloy wheel design, black-coloured rear spoiler (for Agya 1.2 TRD S trim), digital air conditioner controls, touchscreen entertainment system with DVD player (for Ayla 1.2 R and Agya 1.2 TRD S trims), keyless entry system with engine start/stop button (for Agya 1.2 TRD S trim) and an updated seat cover and door trim pattern on some trim levels. Recall

In September 2018, Toyota Motor Philippines issued a recall notice on over 15,000 Wigos produced from 5 April to 15 December 2017. The affected units have a faulty engine wire that may break from engine vibration, resulting in a decrease in engine power and a warning light illumination.
