Donneloye is first mentioned in 1150 as ''Donnolui''. In the 12th century the village was dominated by a branch of a noble family from Goumoens by the name of Donneloye. The river Mentue flows through the commune. The first stone bridge over this river was built during the Bernese period in 1754. The château of Donneloye was probably first built in the 15th century and passed through many hands from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
