Early life

The youngest of six sons, Donald J. Hying was born on August 18, 1963, in

. Later that year, he was moved to St. Anthony Parish in Milwaukee, where he worked as associate pastor of St. for one year. Hying was appointed pastor in 1999 of Our Lady of Good Hope Parish in Milwaukee, remaining there until 2005. He then became the dean of formation at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary from 2005 until 2007, when was named rector. In 2006, while serving at the seminary, Hying was placed as a temporary administrator at St. Augustine Parish in Milwaukee.
