The genus name of ''Diegodendron'' is in honour of Diego Suárez also known as ''Diego Soares de Melo'', ''Diego Suarez de Melo'' and the "Galego", who was a 16th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer (plus ''dendron'' Latin for tree).
