Patterson was homeschooled before 2014, when he moved in with Neal Hawks, the brother-in-law of Mark Cuban. Patterson enrolled at

and helped led the team to the 2015 UIL Class 4A state basketball championship.


College career

Patterson began his collegiate career at

before transferring to Prairie View A&M. As a junior, Patterson averaged 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He was named to the First Team All- SWAC. He declared for the

but withdrew to return to school. Patterson was suspended for the first eight games of his senior season due to an error in draft paperwork. On March 5, 2020, he scored a career-high 33 points and had 10 rebounds in an 80-71 loss to

. As a senior, Patterson finished third in the league in points per game (15.8), and ranked fourth in rebounds per game (6.4) while shooting 46.3 percent on a team that clinched back-to-back regular season titles. He was named SWAC Player of the Year.
