History


Mainland China

The bank was originally proposed in 1923 by Sun Yat-sen's administration in
Guangzhou Guangzhou (, ; ; or ; ), also known as Canton () and alternatively romanized as Kwongchow or Kwangchow, is the capital and largest city of Guangdong province in southern China. Located on the Pearl River about north-northwest of Hong Kon ...
, and was established a year later under the name Central Bank of China. Following the success of the
