Description
The woods were once part of the
Powerscourt Estate
Powerscourt Estate ( ga, Eastát Chúirt an Phaoraigh), located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland, is a large country estate which is noted for its house and landscaped gardens, today occupying . The house, originally a 13th-century cast ...
with records from the 13th-century showing the area was set aside as a royal hunting ground.
Use of the woods for cover during the
1798 Rebellion
The Irish Rebellion of 1798 ( ga, Éirí Amach 1798; Ulster Scots dialect, Ulster-Scots: ''The Hurries'') was a major uprising against British rule in Ireland. The main organising force was the Society of United Irishmen, a Irish republicanism, ...
led to the creation of
the military road through northern Wicklow Mountains with several barracks to open up the region.
The forest is owned and operated by
Coillte, the Irish state forestry agency.
