History and description

The area was initially developed by philanthropist
Job Male Job Male (August 24, 1808 – 1891) was the first Mayor of Plainfield, New Jersey, serving from 1869–1870 and 1877–1878 and finally 1887–1890. Biography Male was born on August 24, 1808 in Somersetshire, England. He emigrated to the United ...
, who moved to Plainfield in 1867, and would become the first major of the city in 1869. He designed and built several of the houses in the district and lived on Crescent Avenue. The Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church is located at the intersection of Crescent Avenue, Watchung Avenue, and 7th Street on land donated by Male. It was built in 1871 with English Gothic style.
