Two decades after the end of the American Civil War, Senator George built "a free-standing hexagonal library" on the grounds.
The mansion remained in the ownership of Senator George's family until 2013. In that year, Katharine Saunders Williams, his great-great-granddaughter, made a generous donation of the property to create the Cotesworth Culture and Heritage Center. This donation allowed for the establishment of a center dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural and historical heritage associated with Cotesworth Mansion.
Heritage significance
It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since June 9, 1978.
