Career

Thompson joined Liverpool as a youngster but was released in 2001 despite being the club's reserve team top scorer during the 2000/2001 season. Thompson made his debut for his new club Grimsby Town, coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute, at home to Norwich City, in a 2–0 defeat in the First Division on 30 October 2001. He made fourteen league appearances for Grimsby, scoring one goal. In 2003, he moved to

where he scored three goal in 27 league appearances. He spent time on loan at Droylsden and Leek Town before moving to
