. Earlier the event was scheduled to be held in September 2022 but due to COVID-19 pandemic cases rising in China the event was postponed and rescheduled to September–October 2023. The host nation, China crossed the 200 gold medal mark for the first time in a single edition of the Asian Games, reaching a total of 201 gold medals, becoming the first country in the history to do so and surpassing their previous record of 199 golds in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
