Professional life

Chen graduated from

in 1957. In the early 1980s he was one of the founders of the ''Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine'', the first English language periodical on TCM published in China. He was also a member of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was co-editor (with Nissi Wang) of ''Acupuncture Case Histories from China'' (Eastland Press, 1988), a book which marked "the first original collection of acupuncture case histories in English.
